Setup Internet Connections

RemoteTap works over any data network, local, Internet or Mobile. To access a Mac from your iPhone when not at home (using a public Wi-Fi hot spot or a Mobile network), the router in your local network connected to the Internet needs to be setup as well (see previous setup section).

That way, its possible to use your router’s external IP address (assigned by your Internet Service Provider) to connect back to any Mac. You can check your current external IP address here. Remember it might be changed by your ISP.

Since the external IP address might change (usually after 24 hours), this is not a very convenient solution. An alternative is to use a Dynamic DNS Service, which translates dynamic external IP address to a fixed DNS name.

There are several free dynamic DNS providers available, just google for "free dynamic dns". Two of them are www.no-ip.com and www.dyndns.com. Some routers support these services automatically, else you need to run a client software in your Mac to update your own DNS name.
