Guardians of the Galaxy: What are Zarg Nuts? Drax’s Favorite Snack

Saving the universe is hard work, and even heroes need to snack once in a while. Zarg Nuts seem to be the go-to munchie of choice for the Guardians of the Galaxy, especially Drax. He’s been spotted eating this delicious space snack at several points throughout the Guardian’s tenure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

They were first mentioned in 2018’s “Avengers: Infinity War” as the supposedly silent snack that the “invisible” Drax eats while eavesdropping on Gamora and Peter Quill’s private conversation. Matis seems to be pretty into the Zarg Nuts too, since Drax can’t seem to get over the fact that she ate the entire bowl of them from the commissary during a funny scene in the Guardians of the Galaxy Christmas Special. They’re so good that in the same scene Drax seems to think they would be a perfect Christmas gift for Peter. High praise for such a simple snack.

The latest reference to the Zarg Nuts is in Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 3 (don’t worry there are no spoilers ahead). At some point during the movie, Drax is once again munching on them right before an important mission. He offers some to Peter to help calm him down and when he declines Mantis asks for some. Drax is obviously still mad about her eating the last batch and he tells her there are none left, right before he grabs and a handful from the “empty bag”. So needless to say these space nuts are a point of contention between Mantis and Drax the destroyer of bags of Zarg Nuts.

So what are Zarg Nuts really? Well, the only one that really knows is the genius writer/director the one and only James Gunn. But, according to the Marvel Cinematic Universe Wiki, Zarg Nuts are a type of edible alien space nut. While there is no definitive answer to what they are made of, there are a few different interpretations. Zarg Nuts have also been featured in a limited-edition Guardians of the Galaxy-themed recipe kit by HelloFresh, which includes Zarg Nut Bites, a snack made of crushed pretzels, salted cashews, sweet Thai chili sauce, and chocolate chips that come together for a salty, crunchy snack. Additionally, Zarg Nuts were made available at the “Wonders Of Xandar” booth at the 2022 New York Comic Con as a toffee candied peanut snack. This Xandarian treat was such a hit that we could eventually be seeing it somewhere on Terra, specifically in Walt Disney World near Wonders of Xandar Pavilion at EPCOT.

While Zarg Nuts may not play a significant role in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, they are a fun and unique addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The fact that they have been featured in a recipe kit and may soon be available at Walt Disney World shows that they have become a popular and recognizable part of the franchise.
